“The History of Alcée Fortier High School”

“Since opening its doors in 1931, Alcée Fortier High School became more than just a place of learning — it became a home for generations of students. Though the building no longer carries the Fortier name, the legacy lives on through its alumni and their shared history.”

The Beginning (1931–1960s)

  • “Fortier High School opened in 1931 as an all-boys high school in Uptown New Orleans, named after Alcée Fortier, a Tulane professor, folklorist, and historian. From its earliest days, the school offered a strong academic foundation and vibrant student life, including music, sports, and clubs that defined the Fortier experience.”

A School in Transition (1960s–1980s)

  • “In 1961, Fortier integrated as part of the civil rights movement in New Orleans. The school became a reflection of a changing city, welcoming new students while facing challenges brought by shifting demographics and social change. Despite difficulties, Fortier remained a proud symbol of resilience and community for its students.”

Challenges & Closure (1990s–2005)

  • “By the 1990s, Fortier faced academic struggles and resource limitations that mirrored wider issues in the public school system. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the school never reopened under its original name. The building was later repurposed by charter schools, but the legacy of Fortier as a historic New Orleans high school endures.”

Fortier Lives On (Today)

  • The Alcee Fortier Alumni Association continues the mission of preserving the school’s history. Through reunions, events, and community efforts, alumni ensure that the Fortier spirit lives on for generations to come.
